Perceptions of digital transformation in lower-mid-level hospitals: analyzing leadership perspectives on digital adoption and patient-centered care

Purpose This study aims to explore the perceptions of leadership in lower–mid-level hospitals regarding the impact of digital transformation on the quality of patient-centered care. It specifically investigates how digital capabilities influence patient care and identifies the key factors within digital capability that contribute most significantly to enhancing patient-centered care in resource-constrained settings. Design/methodology/approach The research adopts a quantitative approach, using a cross-sectional survey design. Data were collected from 285 respondents representing leadership roles in lower–mid-level hospitals. Statistical analysis examined the relationships between digital capability and patient-centered care. Findings This paper’s findings reveal a positive, albeit weak, correlation between digital capability and patient-centered care in lower–mid-level hospitals. Key factors such as leadership support for digital adoption and the availability of trained information and communication technology (ICT) personnel were the most significant contributors to enhancing patient-centered care. This study also highlights that resource constraints, particularly in budget allocations for ICT, continue to pose challenges to fully leveraging digital technologies. Practical implications The study provides valuable insights for hospital administrators and policymakers, suggesting that targeted investments in digital capabilities, particularly in leadership and staff training, are crucial for improving patient-centered care. Originality/value This research contributes to the limited literature on digital transformation in lower–mid-level hospitals, offering empirical evidence on the role of digital capabilities in enhancing patient-centered care. The study’s focus on leadership perspectives provides a unique angle, highlighting the critical role of leadership in navigating digital challenges in health care.
