Abstract Mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) are a transformative concept for wireless communications, especially in fluid and distributed settings. But the fundamental difficulties in controlling connectivity and providing reliable high-speed data transfer between the mobile nodes demand for inventive approaches. One of the most important components of the proposed solution is high-speed optical backhaul that addresses the shortage of necessary infrastructure to provide fast, reliable communication within MANETs. The introduction of optical backhaul in MANET technology that could facilitate connectivity on the move in a smart way is discussed in this paper. We are discussing the possibilities of optical communication, its pros and cons in mobile environment, its technical challenges in implementation followed in future directions. The paper also presents a detailed analysis of the architecture, protocols, and practical considerations for deploying optical backhaul in a MANET context, discussing how it can enhance scalability, reduce latency, and improve overall network performance.
