This preprint presents a theoretical contribution on cognitive change. It argues that access to processing should be distinguished from the availability of structural updating, and introduces admissibility of structural updating as a clarificatory concept for describing when stabilized organization is open to structural updating. The paper is theoretical and diagnostic rather than mechanistic, and is intended as an entry-level contribution within a broader structural framework.
