Coherent detection methods associated with FMCW technology enable range doppler processing with high resolution and sensitivity as well as holographic imaging at long range. Potential advantages of this range selective coherent sensing technique, include achieving range resolution that is significantly less than the optical system's depth of field. A preliminary study on the influence of atmospheric turbulence on states of light carrying orbital angular momentum has been carried out. The characterization of turbulence using an angle of arrival method and the efficacy of OAM mode identification methods in the presence of turbulence as well as the implications for coherent lidar applications are discussed.
