In this April issue of the Journal of Clinical Ophthalmology and Research (JCOR), we have intentionally featured four comprehensive review articles. As we navigate a decade of rapid technological shifts, it is worth reflecting on why these syntheses are more vital now than ever. A review article’s main strength is summarizing the latest developments in a specific subspecialty. In today’s narrow field of eye care, a well-structured review helps busy surgeons quickly grasp years of progress. Whether it’s a new retinal disease protocol or shifting trends in refractive surgery, these reviews offer a curated overview of the evolving landscape. Original research often yields conflicting results. Review articles rigorously compare these studies, offering a “weighted truth” to determine which surgical techniques are superior and which diagnostic tools are overhyped. By highlighting these four reviews, we aim to provide a stable foundation for your daily practice. A great review does more than just look backward; it identifies what we don’t yet know. For the researchers and residents reading JCOR, these articles are roadmaps. They point out the “blind spots” in our current understanding – challenging the next generation to find the answers. In a crowded clinic, time is our most precious commodity. A review article is an act of efficiency. It allows us to stay abreast of the latest pharmacological breakthroughs and safety profiles without having to personally vet every small pilot study. While original research – such as our featured study on AMD genetics in Indonesia or traumatic cataract outcomes – is the engine of progress, the review article is the steering wheel. It ensures we are moving in a direction that is safe and patient-centered. The review article is a bridge. It connects the laboratory to the clinic, the statistician to the surgeon, and global evidence to the individual patient sitting in our chair. We hope that as you engage with the reviews in this issue, you find more than just summaries. We hope you find a clear, consolidated vision of where our field stands today.
