Food and languages are identity of any society, culture and civilization. Food is not just sustenance and languages are not merely communication, both are crucial space for social exchange and identity formation. Philologist and linguistics suggest that all languages were once related. This can be traced through ancient food expressions and related terms This can reflect similarities and differences between ethnicities and cultures. Ancient Indian food culture, symbols, rituals related expressions can be useful indicator of social interaction and communication, within the society and also with other cultures as well. The relationship between language, culture, cuisine is complex. The use of food related words across different languages provides insight into historical and cultural exchanges that have contributed to the rich cultural heritage of India. By exploring the literary sources and cultural practices we can gain a deeper understanding of the country’s history and the ways in which its diverse cultural traditions continue to shape its contemporary identity. In this paper we examine ancient Indian food culture through Indian languages. How different linguistic resources helped historian to recreate the past. The paper will focus on literary sources, in different Indian languages, Sanskrit and Tamil literature, Malayalam and Kannada writings.it will also explore the influence of foreign cultures on Indian food and vice-versa.
