Abstract Pityriasis versicolor (PV) is a superficial fungal infection caused by Malassezia species, usually presenting as hypo- or hyperpigmented macules with fine scaling. We report a rare case of an erythematous variant of PV in a 28-year-old man, confirmed by potassium hydroxide examination of skin scrapings and direct microscopy. Awareness of such atypical variants is crucial in order for dermatologists and practitioners to avoid misdiagnosis and unwanted treatments. Our case also highlights the importance of considering these atypical variants in differential diagnosis of erythematous dermatoses.
