Abstract The cochineal scale, Dactylopius opuntiae (Cockerell, 1896) (Hemiptera: Dactylopiidae), is one of the most destructive pests of prickly pear ( Opuntia ficus‐indica ) in North Africa and causes severe economic losses worldwide. This is the first detection of the insect in Libya. The insect was reported on prickly pear farms in two municipalities in north‐west Libya: Almaya (two sites) and Alqarabulli (one site). Further surveillance across Libya is needed. Awareness raising on this species and phytosanitary measures, including quarantine, border inspection and risk assessment are needed.
