Aceh is known for its strong, distinctive, and eloquent oral tradition. Through this oral tradition, the Acehnese people are able to express various moral teachings, including messages of peace. This study explores one dimension of the strength and beauty of Acehnese oral tradition found in hadih maja (traditional proverbs). The purpose of this study is to identify a clear model of conflict-mitigation rooted in Acehnese oral expressions (hadih maja) that can help prevent horizontal conflict and offer constructive to social problems. This research employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive–analytical textual method. The analyzed texts consist of hadih maja that are both widely known in everyday Acehnese life and those preserved in written documents. The findings reveal that many hadih maja convey principles of conflict mitigation, including (1) the attitude of yielding, (2) prioritizing deliberation and consensus, (3) arbitration, (4) convention, (5) mediation, and (6) refraining from interfering in others’ affairs. These six values advocate the prevention of horizontal conflicts to maintain (1) harmony within the household, (2) peaceful relations with neighbors and the community, and (3) reconciliation with authorities or leaders. Therefore, hadih maja should be continuously preserved and practiced in various social and communicative contexts to prevent horizontal conflicts and social disparities.
