Sustainable solid waste management is one of the wide range of environmental problems besetting Enugu Metropolis. Different campaigns have been carried out to keep the metropolis clean, but the much desired results have not been actualized. The level of degradation inflicted on the environment is, indeed, appalling and dehumanizing. The incessant assault on our senses and the bizzare and depressing images these engender in our minds and condition, once restricted only to a few slumps in the metropolis have now become so pervasive that they must constitute constant reminders of failures of successive authorities. The campaigns to tackle the problem abate and the operations stop almost as abruptly as they started. The refuse trucks break down, some of the dust bins disappear and refuse starts accumulating once again, first in trickles, then in a deluge until it covers the streets and overflows into the open drains. This paper therefore traces the numerous causes of solid waste management problems in Enugu metropolis from a sustainable perspective. Also, some recommendations have been advanced to profer solution to the problem.
