Even slight grinding defects can cause significant variations in quality in diamond finishing. Currently, assessing the machining conditions often relies on the fingertip sensitivity and auditory perception of experienced craftsmen. This research project aims to measure the elastic stress waves (acoustic emissions, or AEs) generated by material deformation and fracture. This will enable the recognition and evaluation of microscopic grinding conditions during the process.
