The drive for electrification in the eMobility industry has resulted in high power electrical machines becoming one of the key components of the electric powertrain. Increasing power and decreasing mass and space requirements see conventional power density limits being pushed with thermal management of electrical machines becoming critical to ensuring reliability and robustness. Electrical machine cooling is essential to dissipate the heat generated inside the machine so that the machine temperature is kept below its thermal limits to avoid insulation breakdown. Advanced cooling systems of modern electric machines are presented in this paper. Effective cooling should combine both passive and active cooling designs. They can be used as a guidance for electrical machine cooling design.
