Faces & Voices of Recovery found 20 years ago in the Peter Hart study that most Americans viewed addiction through a lens of shame, stigma, and moral judgement. A new study shows that Americans now have a completely different view. In the study, Public Perceptions of Addiction and Recovery: A 20‐Year Follow‐Up to the Hart Benchmark, Americans are increasingly moving toward a public health understanding of addiction. “More people believe recovery is real, achievable, and sustainable,” according to Faces & Voices. “More people support recovery ready policies that expand access to treatment, recovery support services, insurance coverage, employment opportunities, and community based support.”
