The effects of the extended band widths of the filters used in observations of the interstellar absorption law are studied, and a monochromatic law of interstellar absorption is derived. Similar effects in the determination of atmospheric extinctions in the (U, B, V) system are studied. The observed U magnitudes and U - B colors for no atmosphere are found to be systematically too large by 0 04 mag
