The description by Bodman and Colman (1943) of moisture content profiles during ponded infiltration is examined for a simple soil system. The zones described by Bodman and Colman are found to exist in the moisture content profiles for the fine sand studied. The existence of the saturation and transition zones, which has been challenged by some reports in the literature, was confirmed and is satisfactorily explained in terms of the encapsulation of air and its subsequent solution in the infiltrating water.
Bond et al. (Wed,) studied this question.
