Abstract Many researchers who are now active in the flourishing field of battery research are coming from backgrounds other than electrochemistry, and might not be in possession of a systematic electrochemical training before they start the journey of “building better batteries.” With this specific audience in mind, the authors review electrochemical techniques commonly used in battery research. Starting from an introduction of the basic electrochemistry concepts, the authors offer a detailed discussion of potential, galvanic, and impedance measurement techniques, providing practical details and useful comments on performing both the data acquisition and analysis. One aim of this essay is to emphasize the importance of standard evaluation of the battery performance.
