• Music contributes to a sense of individual and collective empowerment • Music becomes particularly important during elevated psychological distress • Music is used to voice and denounce injustices, inequalities and stigmatisation Young adults experiencing homelessness and harmful psychoactive substance use experience significant individual and structural challenges. Yet, little is known about how they address these challenges. Music is often used by young adults to address psychosocial challenges, but its use among homeless young adults with harmful PS use remains understudied. This study addressed the question “What is the importance of music during life challenges?” from the perspective of homeless young adults who experience harmful psychoactive substance use. We conducted a qualitative study using an interpretive descriptive design combined with a Photovoice method. Four young adults participated in a series of discussion sessions, during which they developed the research question, took photographs, and interpreted the meanings of their photographs. Data were analyzed thematically using a deductive and inductive approach informed by an empowerment framework and by participants’ own interpretations. Music became particularly important during psychological distress, where participants reported that it saved their lives. Music was also used as a means of action against stigmatization and social injustices, by providing participants with a voice to raise awareness and denounce social issues. These findings could inspire the development of adapted psychosocial services by facilitating homeless young adults’ access to music and enhancing their capacity to act on their personal and community well-being.
