During their employment by Ismaʿ il Pasha, the viceroy of Egypt, Carl von Diebitsch and his successor Franz Schmoranz Jr pursued different approaches regarding the implementation of Islamic style. Both were successful in their careers and had attracted international attention with their exhibitions on world fairs. Despite historicizing tendencies in their architectural oeuvre, they created structures with modern appearances, for instance, by applying new technologies such as cast iron or reusing and modifying Islamic features.
