Unreliable diagnoses have been a problem in the field of mental health for many years. It has been claimed that the third edition of the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-III) has solved the problem. This article reviews the studies and data that are usually cited to support that claim. It describes serious flaws in the studies, incomplete and inconsistent analyses of the data, and misleading interpretations.
