The Kagoro are a small tribe in Northern Nigeria, whose size is no measure of their importance. Today, the Kagoro may well be the most heavily literate and Christian tribal group in the North. Sixty years ago, they presented a different picture. In this article I shall try to describe the tribal polity before British rule, the course of its development thereafter, and the analytic patterns underlying these changes.
