Keeping your temper under control: materials and the manufacture of Papuan pottery

Specific materials and techniques used in production of Melanesian pottery are analyzed. Investigation is made of theoretical advantages of using calcite as tempering material for low-fired, unglazed cooking pots. An experimental attempt was made to determine whether sea water or salt was used in excavated sherds.
