The salience of kin and other categories qf relationships for people at various stages qf the life cycle is investigated using data collected from interviews with 347 adults at different stages of the life cycle. Their sets of close relationships, conceptualized as personal networks, are found to vary with age and life stage, in composition, stability, and degree of involvement. These variations are seen to reflect differences in the concerns and life styles of life stages.
