Allen Archaeology Limited was commissioned by North Lincolnshire Council. to undertake an archaeological watching brief on land off Northfiled Road/Temperance Avenue, Messingham, North Lincolnshire, which was undertaken as a condition of planning consent for a residential development The site lies in an area of archaeological potential with previous evaluation trenching done in 2017 finding Roman remains to the east and undated remains to the west. As planning permission for a residential development was granted with the condition of archaeological monitoring on Plots 1, 2 and 4. Archaeological monitoring of Plot 1 revealed modern made ground and the ground works not impacting beyond the sub-soil level. Plot 2 similarly did not impact on any archaeological or natural horizons. Plot 4 to the west of the development area was also archaeology sterile, however, a collection of pottery sherds from a single vessel was collected from the sub-soil. The depth of the groundworks in Plot 1 and 2 meant that any archaeology would have been preserved in situ. The level of impact on any potential archaeology recorded in Plot 4 would have been minimal with ground works only exposing the top of the natural horizon. The pottery remains recorded in Plot 4 helped identify the previously undated archaeological feature recorded during the evaluation stage of the works The shallow depth of the groundworks in Plot 1 and 2 means that any archaeological features will remain in situ. The level of impact recorded in Plot 4 was minimal with groundworks only exposing the top of the natural horizon.
