Abstract: This essay attempts to recenter Desdemona as the focus of Othello , arguing that her prominence has been lost in the play's extensive "interpretive contexts" and the strong pull to find a secular Shakespeare. Her death, carefully crafted by Shakespeare, suggests a longing for divine contact that presages moments of resurrection, redemption, forgiveness and reconciliation in the later romances.
