Archaeological monitoring and recording on land behind the Pearson Building, Exeter Cathedral, Exeter

A programme of archaeological monitoring and recording was carried out by Oakford Archaeology between August and September 2023 on land at the rear of the Pearson Building, Exeter Cathedral, Exeter. The work comprised the monitoring of works associated with the installation of a new electrical service trench and a new ramp at the rear of the Pearson. The excavations revealed three robbed wall foundations associated with the former 'Three Chambers' tenement as well as extensive deposits associated with the demolition of the building and landscaping of the area in 1893. The finds recovered from the site largely consisted of post-medieval pottery, glass and clay tobacco pipe fragments, although a small amount of residual Roman material was also recovered.
