The purpose of this study was to estimate the construct validity of the 24-item Oddi Continuing Learning Inventory (OCLI) and provide direction for revision of the instrument. Total OCLI scores correlated at low levels with total scores on the Job Activity Survey (JAS), a self-report measure of nurses' on-the-job learning activities, and with subscales representing learning through the modes of Inquiry, Performance, and Self-instruction. OCLI scores were not correlated with a subscale measuring Group Instruction and with voluntary attendance at continuing education programs. Further research of the OCLI should be aimed at (a) refinement of items to reflect learning through various modes and (b) investigation of practicing professionals from a variety of disciplines, using different approaches for estimating its construct validity.
