The equations of equilibrium in a wide class of applications share a common structure. The discrete case leads to a positive definite symmetric matrix AT CA, in which A is rectangular and C is often diagonal. The continuous case (linear or nonlinear) repeats that pattern. There is a minimum principle for the potentials, and a dual principle for the flow variables. We try to clarify these different expressions of the same law.
