SUMMARY Graphical methods are useful in statistics in exploratory analysis and in the presentation of conclusions, and to a more limited extent in very specific analyses. After some historical remarks, some general rules and principles are outlined. The role of smoothing is discussed and some techniques for introducing supplementary information outlined.
