Is the world ready or do we need more tools for programming related teamwork?

Teamwork is an essential part of work nowadays, but many student team projects have serious problems in collaboration. In this work we have identified success and failure factors in programming teamwork projects. Research was conducted with an internationally distributed questionnaire. The results identify that one of the main problems is a failure to see each project member's ongoing progress. Analysis of the data shows a strong correlation between active team communications and positive views of project success, especially in student teams. We propose that project tools should be researched further to support active communication behavior e.g. by visualizing each team member's current inputs in code repositories.
