The statistical theory of rubber elasticity is extended by postulating that the total volume of a piece of rubber remains constant during a stretching process. The modified theory is found to be in better agreement with observation than any previous molecular theory. In addition, it is shown theoretically that rubber should obey Hooke's law with respect to shear.
