The role of universities in implementing the sustainable development goals (SDGs) a case study of Hassan first university 2018–2023

Universities play a pivotal role in advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through education, research, and community engagement. This study examines how Hassan First University in Morocco has integrated the SDGs into its activities from 2018 to 2023, with a focus on teaching, research, and outreach. The analysis highlights the university’s strengths, particularly in SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 4 (Quality Education), and SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being). However, it also identifies significant gaps in SDG 1 (No Poverty) and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), critical areas for Morocco’s socio-economic context. Through bibliometric analysis and institutional data, the study evaluates the alignment of Hassan First University with global sustainability objectives, emphasizing its role in knowledge generation, policy influence, and societal transformation. It also identifies opportunities to enhance the university’Q3s academic impact and contribution to sustainable development, addressing challenges such as limited interdisciplinary collaboration and resource constraints. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of how universities in developing contexts can align with global sustainability priorities, offering actionable recommendations and a replicable framework for higher education institutions seeking to strengthen their role in achieving the SDGs.
