Abstract This article discusses the characteristics of a successful elementary mentor program between students and community members. The authors describe a long-standing mentoring program, the Kennedy Kids and Adults Together program at J. F. Kennedy Elementary School in Kingston, New York, and outline 10 steps for establishing such a program. In addition, the results of a program evaluation conducted with students, family members, teachers, and mentors are reported.
