Abstract Functional brain imaging makes it possible to study the human brain at work. There has been an explosive growth in this field during the last few years, and the expansion seems to continue. Several different techniques can be used for brain imaging. The focus here is on positron emission tomography (PET) and to a somewhat lesser extent on functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). An important characteristic of these and related techniques is that they can simultaneously measure activity in the whole brain.
