Increasing ownership concentration prompted an analysis of how monopoly affects the performance of daily newspapers. The authors trace previous methods for isolating standards of performance and then test a host of economic indicators against quality indicators in a sample of some 100 largest newspapers in 78 different communities. Without drawing conclusive evidence of how ownership type relates to performance, the study provides numerous insights about ownership patterns, newspaper economics and the product itself.
