This is an overview of urbanization in Latin America and Asia. The authors argue that the major cities play a crucial role in the process of capital accumulation and of unequal exchange and dependency. They show how the flow of capital through the urban system brings net losses to rural areas and further exacerbates income inequalities among regions and classes. Theoretical issues are also discussed and projections of likely future developments in urbanization are offered. (EXCERPT)
