Abstract Often more than one quantitative trait is measured on each person in a set of pedigrees. The present paper suggests a class of covariance components models that will allow investigators to explore the genetic and environmental relationships between two quantitative traits. The theoretical framework for the models is given and criticized. We also discuss specific maximum likelihood methods for parameter estimation and hypothesis testing.
