Vision for Civil and Environmental Engineering Departments in the 21st Century

Six years ago, the writer wrote a viewpoint on “Sustainable Infrastructure Systems and Environmentally Conscious Design—A View for the Next Decade” Adeli 2002 . In this forum, the writer presents a vision for a modern civil and environmental engineering CEE program in the twenty-first century. Civil engineers build civilizations! But CEE programs have lost momentum in attracting both students and resources in many U.S. universities in recent years. Some universities and colleges have even shut down their civil engineering program entirely, for example, Tulane University and Union College. How do we turn this around?
