Coud spectra have been obtained for 13 galaxies brighter than B(0) < 13 using the University College London image photon counting system. A Fourier technique similar to the one proposed by Simkin has been used to obtain simultaneous estimates of redshifts, velocity dispersions, and line strengths. The accidental errors in the redshift estimates are 5-10% of the velocity dispersion; those for the dispersion estimates are 5%. Several tests indicate that the dispersion estimates are free from systematic errors greater than 10%. Our dispersion estimates are systematically 22% smaller than those of Faber and Jackson. Their relation L cr between luminosity and velocity dispersion is confirmed. A simple consequence of this relation is presented. Subject headings: galaxies: internal motions - galaxies: redshifts
