McConnel (1984) reported that the risk of institutionalization is 48.2% at birth and 63% at 65. In this research, reservations are expressed concerning McConnel's application of the life table technique. Subsequently, alternative interpretations, as well as estimates of the probability of institutionalization, are presented. Our estimates are substantially lower than McConnel's and are much closer to those reported by previous investigators.
