Mutant strains were isolated from Salmonella typhimurium and Escherichia coli deficient in either Enzyme I or the phosphate carrier protein of a bacterial phosphotransferase system. The mutants behaved identically in terms of their growth properties on some carbohydrates, but differed on others. The variations are discussed in terms of genetic and physiological alterations of the proteins of the bacterial phosphotransferase system and of some catabolic enzymes.
