5G use cases entail stringent requirements such as ultra-low latency and ultra-high reliability. As a result, bringing computing, storage and networking resources to the edge of the network has become a critical concern for 5G networking deployment. Nevertheless, capital and operational expenditures are to be carefully considered if it is aimed to achieve cost-effectiveness in this context; with edge nodes geographically distributed, efficiency is directly linked to the placement and capacity planning of such nodes. This paper presents a formulation of the Edge Computing nodes placement problem as a Mixed Integer Linear Programming constrained by latency and high-reliability requirements. A framework proposal based on an in-house heuristic is outlined to solve the described problem.
