PURPOSE: To explore the experiences of adult patients and informal carers participating in a Virtual Rehabilitation Ward (VRW) aimed at preventing unnecessary hospital admissions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This qualitative study was conducted in Adelaide, South Australia, where the VRW operated within a tertiary hospital. Patients who had received VRW care and informal carers (family members or friends providing unpaid support) were interviewed. Informal carers were not required to be linked to participating patients. Semi-structured interviews explored experiences with the service. Data were analysed using Braun and Clarke's thematic analysis. RESULTS: Twenty-three participants (12 patients, 11 informal carers) were interviewed (16-45 min). Mean age was 63 years (patients, range 34 to 81 years), and 69 years (informal carers, range 59 to 78 years). Initial hesitation and feelings of being overwhelmed generally diminished with staff support, and the service was viewed positively. Themes identified were "initial expectations and insecurities", "getting started is the hardest part", "reassurance and connection" and "the burden worth bearing". CONCLUSIONS: The VRW was considered a viable alternative to hospital-based rehabilitation. However, effective implementation requires clear communication, structured onboarding, greater inclusion of informal carers in decision-making, and ongoing support to optimise engagement, acceptability, and sustainability.
