A significant enhancement of the stratospheric aerosol and condensation nuclei levels was observed at Laramie, Wyoming beginning in May 1981, following the eruption of the volcano Alaid (50.8°N, 155.5°E) on April 28. Observations to mid‐July suggest that in terms of effects on the stratosphere, the eruption was similar to that of Mt. St. Helens in May 1980.
