The focus of this paper is on improving the efficiency of wind turbine systems to optimize the output power provided from the turbine. We present a new design of a Fractional Nonlinear Synergetic Controller (FNSC) used to achieve maximum power point tracking (MPPT) of a wind energy conversion system with variable speed. The fractional order is introduced by taking a macro variable with fractional integral. The principal objective of the new design of the FNSC is to improve the performance of the synergetic control law. Three kinds of macro-variables are proposed in order to compare and show the advantage of the new proposed macro-variable. These controllers are tested with a non-linear wind turbine using a Simulink/Matlab environment. Compared to the conventional synergetic controller, the simulation results show good performance.
