The theory of task and social-emotional role differentiation as developed by Bales and Slater is extended along certain lines suggested by Verba. Such role differentiation is hypothesized to result from an inequality of participation in task oriented activity under the condition that high task participation is not legitimated by social circumstances. Support for this hypothesis is demonstrated using three alternative conceptions of role differentiation.
