T cells in the respiratory tract exhibited polyfunctional cytokine profiles, high antigen sensitivity, and potent in vivo cytotoxicity. These specific T cells played protective roles during MERS-CoV infection by promoting viral clearance. Collectively, this study identified MERS-CoV-specific T cell epitopes and elucidated the roles of ORF4b- and ORF5-specific T cells, enhancing our understanding of anti-MERS-CoV T cell responses and advancing vaccine design strategies against MERS-CoV.
