Traumatic optic nerve injury occurs in approximately 1.5%–4% of cases of head trauma and is thought to be caused by the impact of a blow to the lateral part of the eyebrow region reaching the optic canal. Since traumatic optic nerve injury is a type of trauma, the etiologic mechanisms often overlap. If the degree of injury is severe, recovery is difficult.
