This article presents, for the first time in digital edition and English translation, Martin Warnke’s essay on Political iconology. Originally published in the volume Die Lesbarkeit der Kunst. Zur Geistes-Gegenwart der Ikonologie, edited by Andreas Beyer, the text was later republished as the introduction to the Bildindex zur politischen Ikonographie. Through examples ranging from early modern political ritual to modern mass media, Warnke reflects on the operative power of images within the public sphere and on the historical relationship between visual representation, political authority, and collective perception.
