Homogeneous electrocatalytic reduction of sevoflurane has been studied at a glassy carbon electrode in the presence of tetraphenyl iron(III) porphyrin chloride (Fe(TPP)Cl). Cyclic voltammetry was used to investigate the redox properties of this system in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). It was found that sevoflurane is non-electroactive in the potential region between 0.5 and −2.6 V vs. Ag reference electrode. However, it shows an irreversible peak at about −1.86 V in DMSO containing the Fe(TPP)Cl complex. Linearity was observed over the range of 0.1 to 2.0 mM with a detection limit of 0.04 mM by differential pulse voltammetry.
