Two types of sol-gel fabrication techniques have been investigated for preparing micrometer-sized dye-doped silica particles. For hydrophilic dye-doping, tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) was added into dye-dissolved alcohol solution containing ammonia water as a catalyst For hydrophobic dye-doping, polymerized phenyltriethoxysilane (PTES) in HCI solution containing dyes was titrated into ammonia water with stirring to make organic-inorganic(SiO 2 ) particles by emulsion method. In both of them, interactions between dyes and matrices of the particles were essential to control their properties such as particle size, monomer dye doping ratio: In hydrophilic dyes charges of dyes and silica particles, and in hydrophobic dyes affinity between incorporated dyes and polymerized PTES.
